My Review : Significance by Shelly Crane

Significance (Significance, #1)
From Goodreads:

Maggie is a seventeen year old girl who's had a bad year. She was smart and on track, but then her mom left, her dad is depressed, she's graduating - barely - and her boyfriend of almost three years dumped her for a college football scholarship. Lately she thinks life is all about hanging on by a thread and is gripping tight with everything she has.

Then she saves the life of Caleb and instantly knows there's something about him that's intriguing. But things change when they touch, sparks ignite. Literally.
They imprint with each other and she sees their future life together flash before her eyes. She learns that not only is she his soul mate, and can feel his heartbeat in her chest, but there is a whole other world of people with gifts and abilities that she never knew existed. She herself is experiencing supernatural changes unlike anything she's ever felt before and she needs the touch of his skin to survive.
Now, not only has her dad come out of his depression to be a father again, and a pain as well, but Caleb's enemies know he's imprinted and are after Maggie to stop them both from gaining their abilities and take her from him.

Can Caleb save her or will they be forced to live without each other after just finding one another?

                               My thoughts:

Hmmm.. Imprinting.  The first that came into my mind is.. You guess it right! Twilight! Yes, first part of the book has the "Twilight feel" in it. Only this time, our heroine, Maggie got to save  Caleb from getting crush by a truck! ( instead of Edward saving Bella! ) *trying hard not to roll my eyes!  The result? Instant imprinting. Yes, Caleb imprinted Maggie and became his Significant. Apparently, Caleb is not human and came from a family of Aces and they need to imprint to ascend and gain their abilities. So, I was still thinking... What kind of paranormal creatures  are they? Not a vampire ( no sparkles! Thank goodness!) and not a werewolf either?! ( no shifting! What a relief! -- which means no display of abs and pecs? Bummer! LOL ) See? I don't hate twilight. And I'm in nobody's team! I'm team Ja-ward! (Jacob and Edward! ) Okay.. I just made that up! Oh my! I got distracted !  ( Like a Minion  to his banana?! ) Banana! Banana! Haha.

Well, the truth is I easily got distracted for most part of the book. The story is slow paced and the explanation about this imprinting took a few chapters. Maybe, I'd be more interested if I had no idea about it. The characters are really good though. Both Caleb and Maggie are very likable . Caleb is all protective and sweet over Maggie. I love Maggie ...though she acts naive sometimes but I totally understand her.And who wouldn't freak out when suddenly your almost ordinary life begun to change drastically?! Like you became the Significant / Soul mate of someone "not Human" ---An Ace?!

Soul mates may sound romantic ...but she  is still seventeen?!A little too young for that ... why start with cutie puppy love for starters?  We are not talking about the regular soul mate-thing here, this is Significant-Soul mate to the extreme! Imagine, you can't bear to be separated , like literally? Yes, like you get super ill ...and experience excruciating pain  without your other half? Plus you can feel his heartbeat like it's yours? ( I kinda love this one! --now this I'll call romantic! ) And.... you can actually see  and read each other's thoughts and feelings ?!  Like mental telepathy but you can also playback any scene you want your Significant to see! Super cool indeed!

And the super coolness doesn't end  there, when they ascend they will acquire much abilities too! Quite exciting huh? Caleb's family, the Johansons  are thrilled , they been waiting for these to happen...and they loved Maggie ! But well, not everyone are thrilled . Apparently , their rival clan, the Watsons are quite  belligerent about this and would do anything to stop the ascension from happening! So, the action begins when Maggie becomes the main target!  And Poor Maggie, was caught between the long time feud between these clans. Maggie is in danger. Even in her dreams , Markus , the super villain could enter and cause her harm! So, Caleb have to sneak in her room at night to sleep with her... uhmm, I mean sleep beside her to keep safe . Sounds scandalous for a sixteen year old and nineteen year old boy? But not!  Caleb was a total gentleman! Never ever took advantage of the "favorable" situation they are in!  Except for a kiss or two?! And Caleb's kisses are the swoony ones! Awwwwww! I want those kisses too!!!

Though the story is a little slow paced at the beginning, the middle part is action filled. I can even feel my heartbeat beating a little faster like Maggie when she tries to escape from her captors! And I was screaming for Caleb in my head! Uh-oh?  I got mental telepathy too? I wish! --- I guess, I got a little carried away?! Hehe..  It was really good! And it's is one of my favorite scenes! Maggie was so brave to face such an ordeal. My admiration for Maggie leveled up!

The ending is a cliffy but in a good kind of cliffy. It was something that left me a little giddy and smiley. I'll give you a little scenario, it has something to do with Caleb and Maggie alone ( well almost!) somewhere in a beautiful Californian beach ! Oh yeah, now you get the picture why I'm dying to know what will happen next!  Maybe a little bit of this ...

And this...

Plus this...

All definitely spells S-W-O-O-N-Y!!!  ( Dreamy sigh! )

  1. Wow, I would have never connected the Twilight-likeness, but with your examples, I can see the comparisons. This book doesn't sound up my alley, but my cousin would probably really like it. I really love the song you picked out for this book's playlist. Great review, Billie :D
